History:

Silver Mountain, originally called Jackass Ski Bowl was constructed in the summer of 1967 on land leased from the Bunker Hill Mining Company. It began operation in January 1968 but because of some bad winters it was forced to close just 6 seasons after its opening. Following bankruptcy its assets were sold in 1973 and Silver Mountain was then renamed Silverhorn Ski Area owned by Shoshone Recreation Inc. “Silverhorn” was later acquired by the city of Kellogg in 1984.

Bunker Hill, the aforementioned mining company was forced to close in 1981 due to falling metal prices and health concerns. The result of this was Kellogg and its surrounding areas economies slumped due to all the high-wage job losses. The closing of the mines in Kellogg and the surrounding area caused the city and its people to focus more on tourism, mainly its ski resort (Silver). With the help of a 6.4 million appropriation bill by the U.S. Congress a gondola would be built from Kellogg to Silverhorn (Silver) to help make it more accessible. In April of 1989 construction for the gondola, a base village, and other resort improvements began. The mountain was renamed to its current name Silver Mountain Resort and opened for summer operations in June 1990 and when winter approached skiing began. In June of 1996 Silver Mountain was acquired by Eagle Crest Partners, a subsidiary of JELD-WEN Corporation.
